I’m am going to the beach now. I decided to go two hours ago
and have been distracted. Before heading off for my sea salted meander, I sat
down to create a list. The list was 20 ways to get a writing practice going. (I
could only think of 10) Twenty ways to create a habit. Then I was going to go
to the beach. However, from that list, became a second list, ‘Twenty ideas to nurture
creativity’. Twenty things I could do to keep me focussed on writing. (Amazingly,
I came up with twenty-three.) During this time, I remembered the names of some
writers I liked so Googled them and then connected to their Instagram. Whilst
on their Instagram I saw other people of interest and Googled, then
subsequently followed them as well.
Then a thought struck me. I remembered a book I bought years
ago when I was trying to find inspiration and endeavouring to get a writing
practice going. Did I still have it? I rummaged through my book case.
I bet you just saw I vision of me crouched in front of a
bulging overflowing bookcase crammed with dusty volumes, ripped paperbacks and
stacks of colourful magazines piled on the floor. (Because I did, just then as I
wrote it) Or perhaps you saw me zooming along on one of those sliding ladders
across walls of books. Hanging on by one hand the other flayed out like a rodeo
star. (I also envisioned that scene and chuckled to myself. THAT would be fun!) But no. My bookcase is
very modest. Largely because I had to get rid of a great many books as my last
home had been invaded by and riddled with, mould, so the books had to go and
when I left, I also decided to become a minimalist. Not to mention the
invention of E-readers! (However, all that my friends are a whole other story)
So back to the book…I found the book and started reading.
Reading is a great way for me to distract myself from writing. So is going to
the beach. Although both those things are also terrific ways to inspire and
generate writing ideas. (Both had made it the ‘Nurturing ideas’ list) Really,
if I wanted to distract myself from writing…which of course I do…I could do the
washing (yes, I already have a load churning away), I could meet a friend for a
“Coffee” which would result in four hours in a cafĂ© discussing all manner of
important things and a plan to save the world from the crazy humans that
inhabit it. (That was yesterday’s folly) Or I could distract myself with
emails, social media, gardening, parenting or best yet, tea making and
drinking.
Forgive me…the book. Yes, I started reading and although I
had read this book before, twice in fact, I saw it with fresh eyes, I
understood it, it spoke to me. It was a book about writing. OK, what I might do
is re-read this book again. (To get ideas on how to get disciplined, how to
habit form, how to sit down and write! Of course, I will do this after I have
been to the beach for my walk, after I have hung the washing out, made a cup of
tea or perhaps after I have had coffee with my friend…to tell her about the
book.
Yes, After I have
done all that I might write a bit.
Perhaps…Definitely. Maybe.
Or perhaps I will just sit down right now and write…hmmm???
What will I write about?
